Step through the courtyard door where the past seamlessly blends with modern comfort. Coyote House is not "just" a rental property - it is our personal home. As such, you’ll find a heightened sense of homeyness and attention to detail during your stay.

Living Areas: The home’s saltillo floor tiles, "slick plaster" interior walls, and vigas beams are characteristic of the New Mexican building style. Pull up a cozy seat by one of the two gas fireplaces, one in the living room and one in the kitchen. The adjoining dining area is perfect for family gatherings or intimate meals. Family heirlooms and items collected in our world travels are among the furnishings. Original artworks, including many by local artists, adorn the walls.

Bedrooms: The two bedrooms are furnished with king-size beds and medium-firm hybrid mattresses. Each bedroom is decorated with a mix of new and vintage furnishings. Cozy linens and two sets of pillows (one set firm and one set plush) ensure a restful night's sleep. Noise machines and fans accommodate a range of sleep styles.

Bathrooms: The bathrooms blend rustic charm and contemporary amenities. Take a hot bath or a shower in the full bathroom, and enjoy the convenience of an additional half-bath. The bathrooms are separated from the bedrooms by the main living areas of the house.

Kitchen: A fully-equipped kitchen awaits you. Modern appliances, including a dishwasher for easy cleanup, ample counter space, and a farmhouse sink provide everything you need to whip up delicious meals.

Outdoor Space: Step outside the primary bedroom onto a private patio. Sip your morning coffee or enjoy an evening under the star-studded New Mexico sky from the bistro table and chairs. In the main shared courtyard, take your dinner under the cottonwood tree covering the property or enjoy a fire in the clay chiminea. NOTE: (BYOW) bring your own local firewood and fire starters.
Guest access
Coyote House is one of two rental units on the property, which is referred to as "Stova". The main courtyard and the parking area are shared, but the units are completely separate. Guests have private access to the entire 2-bedroom, 1.5-bathroom Coyote House and private access to the patio off of the primary bedroom.
Additional notes
Heating/Cooling, Historic Building, Bugs & Children:

Like similar historic homes in northern New Mexico, Coyote House does not have central heating or air conditioning. The house uses the gas fireplaces and wall-mounted heaters to heat each room. The fireplaces, especially the fireplace in the kitchen, which has an exposed metal exterior, must be operated with caution. In the spring of 2024, we will add air conditioning units (mini-splits) to each bedroom. However, those are not yet installed.

Due to the historic nature of the property, certain features may reflect the charm of a bygone era, including uneven floors, varied door widths, small window openings, etc. We love these things about the home. Being made of adobe (literally, dirt), Coyote House is integrated into the surrounding ecosystem, and therefore, harmless bugs often make their way inside.

Stova is attached on each side to the neighboring properties. The walls are three-feet thick adobe, so no sound comes through. But respect for our neighbors and the neighborhood is of utmost importance, and as such, outdoor quiet hours are required in the later evenings.

Coyote House may not be appropriate for young children. Those specifically looking for the features of a newly constructed home or for a large outdoor space will probably prefer a different property.

Pet Policy:

Guests are not allowed to bring pets to Coyote House. If we are on-site, you may see our small, low-shed Cavapoo dog.

Coyote House’s prime location offers easy access to:

-San Francisco de Asis Church. This beautiful and much-depicted 18th century church is just a block away. In fact, Coyote House and the surrounding homes were part of the original structures built as a fort around the church. The role of Ranchos de Taos as part of Taos’ larger history is a wonderful topic for further reading.

-Ranchos de Taos Plaza. The buildings surrounding the San Francisco de Asis Church offer limited, but authentic, shopping, eating, and coffee options for locals and visitors alike.

-Taos Plaza. A 10-minute drive will take you to the heart of Taos, where you can explore galleries, shops, and indulge in the vibrant local dining scene.

-Taos Pueblo. Discover the millennia old traditions of the Tiwa community at this UNESCO World Heritage Site, only 15 minutes away.

-Outdoor Adventures. Embark on hiking, skiing, and mountain biking adventures in the nearby Taos Ski Valley or Carson National Forest.

We split our time between Ranchos and Denver, Colorado, and so we most likely will not be on-site during your stay. But we are an email, text or phone call away if you need any help or recommendations. We also have a team on the ground for cleaning and maintenance. Feel free to reach out to us at any time!
Neighborhood overview
Located just a few miles southwest of Taos, the small community of Ranchos de Taos is nestled among mature cottonwoods and fruit trees with beautiful views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Ranchos is a quiet neighborhood of primarily permanent residents. Most walkable attractions are in the Ranchos Plaza around the San Francisco de Asís Church. Otherwise, Taos and its many sites are within easy driving distance. The Taos Plaza is an ~10 minute drive from Coyote House.
Getting around
Parking for 2 cars is provided on-site. Ranchos de Taos Plaza is one block away from Coyote House and easily walkable. Other destinations within the neighborhood may be accessed on foot. However, this is a rural area and there are no sidewalks. Parking is generally easy to find in and around Taos except close to the Taos Plaza at peak hours.
